The Story of The Purple Pub
The National Hotel: 1894 – Late 1970s
Established in 1894, the National Hotel was built during Normanton’s early days as a frontier town in Queensland’s Gulf Savannah. It quickly became a vital stop for miners, stockmen, and travellers moving through the region, offering a place to rest, share stories, and connect in a remote outback setting. Through the mid-1900s, it remained a central part of community life, hosting locals and visitors alike and reflecting the character and resilience of the town.
The Purple Pub: Late 1970s – Today
In the late 1970s, the hotel took on its now-famous purple exterior, marking its transformation into the iconic Purple Pub. The bold new look gave the building a distinct identity and helped establish it as one of the most recognisable pubs in outback Queensland. Today, it continues to serve as a welcoming hub in Normanton, offering accommodation, a bottle shop, meals, and genuine country hospitality while carrying forward its long-standing legacy.
